About South West Khasi Hills District

History of Mawkyrwat
Mawkyrwat नाम के पीछे कई ऐतिहासिक और लोककथात्मक मान्यताएँ जुड़ी हुई हैं। स्थानीय इतिहास के अनुसार पहले इस स्थान को Mawthengbah कहा जाता था। एक प्रसिद्ध कथा के अनुसार “U Kyrwat” नामक एक सम्मानित व्यक्ति ने क्षेत्र के विकास और बाजार की स्थापना में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई थी। उनके योगदान को सम्मान देने के लिए बाद में इस क्षेत्र का नाम Mawkyrwat रखा गया।
एक अन्य लोककथा के अनुसार Mawthengbah में एक बड़े स्मारक पत्थर (Monolith) की स्थापना के दौरान “U Kyrwat” नामक व्यक्ति का बलिदान दिया गया था। बाद में स्थानीय लोगों ने उनकी स्मृति में इस स्थान का नाम Mawkyrwat रख दिया।
